Cardiovascular Disease is heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. It includes coronary heart disease which leads to heart attack, angina, stroke, heart failure, peripheral arterial disease and blood clots.
Cardiovascular disease happens when blood vessels gradually narrow when fatty plaque builds up on the blood vessel walls constricting blood flow. If a blood clot forms it can completely block an already narrow blood vessel stopping blood supply to critical parts of your body such as your brain or heart resulting in a stroke or heart attack. Obesity, smoking, inactivity, kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are contributors and greatly increase your risk of contracting CVD.
Historically CVD risk was measured and treated by considering risk factors such as blood pressure or cholesterol in isolation. It is now known that many risk factors conspire to increase your overall risk of contracting Cardiovascular Disease. In 1991 the Farmington Heart Study from Boston published their now universal formula for calculating CDV risk which takes into consideration major CVD risk factors such as blood pressure, blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels, age and gender when calculating CVD risk.
5 year risk Classification for developing Cardiovascular Disease:
Invented in the late 1800's Body Mass Index (BMI) is defined as an individual's body weight divided by the square root of their height. There are some exceptions as the BMI does not take into account gender, body type, muscle mass, body fat or fitness level.
BMI is useful as a guideline to determine whether one is within a healthy weight range.
